Some got the GEDs and then went to college. I am so proud of those students as if they were my own.

Comment on Joplin’s EF-5 Tornado: 3 Lessons Learned about Crisis Leadership by Steve Patterson http://cjhuff.com/joplins-ef-5-tornado-3-lessons-learned-about-crisis-leadership/#comment-9 Fri, 13 Dec 2019 17:19:48 +0000 http://cjhuff.com/?p=643#comment-9 There two times when CJ Huff articulated a vision for our Joplin schools, both of which felt like the call of a country under attack. The first was a year before the EF5. He revealed his dream for a support system for our at risk students called BRIGHT FUTURES. It involved all facets of our community in a coalition, business, social services, faith based organizations, parents and the schools. I would argue that this was a strategic tool to help in the recovery.
The second time CJ spoke forth with vision was on Memorial Day just days after the tornado. As the teachers, employees and students gathered that day in the ruins of Joplin High School, after revealing the number of students and personnel we had lost, he told them with bold expectations that we had 89 days to get our buildings and other locations ready for school to start and he said, “We will start on time!”
In both instances, this preacher felt like a soldier saluting the flag. I saw many miracles in those 89 days. CJ had a great supporting cast and many people praying for these things to come true!
By the way, his vision for the initiative called BRIGHT FUTURES has now been duplicated in nearly 70 other school districts in eight or nine states. Check it out at: http://www.brightfuturesusa.org

Comment on A Line in the Sand: When is Enough, Enough? by Randy Baker http://cjhuff.com/a-line-in-the-sand-when-is-enough-enough/#comment-8 Mon, 09 Dec 2019 17:51:52 +0000 http://cjhuff.com/?p=603#comment-8 CJ did you not have any comments to this excellent article? or do they just not appear? If the former this is saddest part of all.
There is no magic wand, sadly. And in a growing worldwide economy that will become more and more AI-oriented thereby eliminating many and eventually most of the menial service related jobs the issue will only grow.
The side-choosers among us will spend their effort/energy pointing the finger at the “other” side laying blame and name-calling getting us no where.
The answer to the lack of education seldom addressed lies in the HOME and the answer to poverty also seldom addressed likewise likewise in the HOME…
In a time where so many are addicted to their “electronic delusions” or under-educated (40% graduate not knowing how to read at a true-not watered down-5th grade level and 34% drop out before that figure) the issue seems unsolvable…
But the real issue is the lack of comments herein…for until that issue is addressed there is no solution!!!

Comment on Joplin’s EF-5 Tornado: One Lesson I’ll Never Unlearn by Bud Sexson http://cjhuff.com/joplins-ef-5-tornado-one-lesson-ill-never-unlearn/#comment-5 Mon, 02 Dec 2019 17:06:34 +0000 http://cjhuff.com/?p=580#comment-5 I look back and can only say that our leader, Dr. Huff made the difference. We needed a guiding light and he showed up. We needed hefty goals and he provided. It is a time that tested each of us to be our best. These are the times that build you and engaged you’re true senses of who you are. 5.22.11 will be with me forever and I choose to make it a positive to draw strength.
